1. Check Engine Oil and Coolant Levels Weekly
Low oil is one of the leading causes of generator failure. Check oil level with the dipstick every week, and inspect coolant level in the radiator overflow tank.
2. Change Oil and Filters on Schedule
Follow the manufacturer's recommended oil change intervals, typically every 250-500 operating hours. Always replace both oil and fuel filters during oil changes.
3. Keep the Battery Charged and Clean
Check battery terminals for corrosion monthly, clean with a wire brush, and ensure the battery charger maintains proper voltage. Replace batteries every 3-4 years proactively.
4. Exercise the Generator Under Load
Running your generator without load can cause carbon buildup. Exercise under at least 30% of rated load for 30 minutes monthly. Load bank testing annually is recommended for critical applications.
